5K Linkup March 19, 2013

I did it!  I finished Week 3 and I'm moving on to Week 4!  You may recall that last week I was completely stressing about how HARD that extra 30 seconds is...well, I'm here to tell you that it got easier...SO much easier!  And in Week 3, I had to run 3 minutes.  The first time, it was hard...but I did it.  I even got a little bit crazy and pushed myself on Day 2 to 3:30...and guess what?  I didn't die; that's pretty cool, right??

I actually ran for FOUR minutes last night.  I figured something out:  you have to find a sweet spot.  A speed in which you can sustain the longer period of time.  That speed for me is 4mph...laugh, I know, it's slow...but it's 1mph faster than my fast-ish walk, so that's pretty significant, right?  Short-stumpy legs, what can I say :)

I wasn't able to do any part of Week 3 outside, so I wonder if I can do the same thing off the treadmill; I'll have to see this week.

So, here's what I have to say to whomever is listening - this C25K thing?  It works.  I've heard from SOO many people that it does, but you really don't know until you do it yourself.  If you're thinking about it, try it!

  1. Great work! I'm just in the middle of week two and I was nervous but you are right, it is do-able and it gets easier! I walk at 3mph and "run" at 4mph, I figure I can work on speed once I get the whole running 3 miles and not stopping part down :)

  2. Hey girl I am visiting from the link-up! Good for you for the 4 minutes, I think thats amazing!! I am going to start c25k soon! This week is not looking so hot with a crazy schedule! I laughed when you said "and I didn't die" because that is totally how I feel! Who cares what pace you are going at, as long as you are going! I cannot wait to hear how this week goes for you!!

  3. Good job Jenn!
I tried the C25K when I first started running (it does work!) but I found it hard to stop and walk then go again. It made me really tired and I found it very hard so instead I just ran until I couldn't and kept adding more time/distance.
I run slow too..I'm not sure my pace outside, but the few times I use the treadmill it's around 4-4.5, but at least it's something :)

  4. Congrats on your success so far! I totally get the sweet spot. Its kind of the pace you would be running if the treadmill weren't dictating your speed so who cares what it has to say! Keep it up!

    1. Thanks, Sammie! I will probably have weeks that I have to do over, too because it doesn't seem possible that I'll be able to run a mile or two in just a few weeks' time?? So proud of you, too!

  7. Go Jenn!!! You are almost half way there!!! I never focused on speed, and I still don't. My main focus is the distance, I don't care how long it takes me to get there I just want to get there running (and yes I may run the same pace as most people walk, but it's running in my book).

    1. Thank you, Ann!! I need to remember NOT to focus on that, just to move and I think I could find my groove for longer?? I need to also remember that it's not a race (officially), just a goal to reach on my own!

  9. Way to go! You are so right....find your sweet spot no matter how slow. You'll get faster, but I like being slow myself. Keep it up!

  11. I'm almost done with week 6 (tomorrow). Of course, week 3 took me 3 weeks! (Sick, schedule, etc)

It is amazing! I never thought I was a runner. But I'm becoming one.

And I'm not laughing at your 4 MPH---my run is between 3 and 3.5 MPH
